Does 200 million page views a month catch your attention? How about knowing 41% of the members between the ages of 34 and 55 and all groups are divided nearly evenly between male and female? If that isn’t enough to get your attention consider these:

1. Members look for content by areas of interest.
2. All content is video and each video can be described using text that is rich with targeted keywords for your product or service.

Just a Couple More Things

1. The information above is about YouTube.. the 6th highest volume site on the Internet. The demographic data is for the US only and yet YouTube is International. The real number are larger but not quantified.
2. There are more than 150 social media sites on line and growing. Each one is attempting to carve out a niche of the huge general market. Of the 150, approximately one third are video sites. Once a person masters YouTube alll the skills are generally transferable to other niche market video sites.

The Action Plan Tracker

I have a business consulting firm. I teach companies how to build revenues and profits using proven principles and processes. Part of the business consulting work plan is to help the client implement an improved and more effective marketing strategy. Social media is now a required component of my updated business marketing strategy model. The numbers of people joining social media sites and becoming very active are very significant and should not be ignored.

There are a huge number of businesses that do not have websites, use blogs, test on line promotion campaigns, execute effective email campaign which are all very proven and effective marketing tools. Social media sites generally completely ignored by most companies. The exceptions are wisely building brand and loyalty.

Very recently I developed the groups YouTube Mastery on Facebook and MySpace as well as the the site www.youtubemastery.net These resources are just being developed and the website is very underdeveloped. However, I have a very clear plan and once I reach that point I take action and sacrifice some perfection. People need to know about these opportunities now and begin using all the Internet tools plus traditional marketing tools in their business now. I currently advise business owners that they need to be devoting nearly 80% of their time on marketing. Part of that 80% includes working with staff and others accountable for marketing. Marketing and developing people are the two most important areas where a business owner needs to spend their time. All other responsibilities should be delegated. What if your are an entrepreneur of one. The point is still the same.

Right Now Action Steps:

1. Join the group YouTube Mastery on Facebook
2. Visit and register at www.youtubemastery.net

These two actions will result in you getting up to speed on using social media and social media video to market your business.

Sending all my readers the energy of wellness, happiness and peace.

25% of a $4.00 cost per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is due to the devaluation of the US dollar in the past 24 months. Restated: if the US dollar was at the same value in the currency markets as it was this time in 2006, the price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline would be $3.00.

Do you remember fuel at $3.00 per gallon? Of course you do. It wasn’t that long ago. Did you adjust your lifestyle? Let’s look at statistics for spending during the Christmas season of 2007 when the price per gallon was just about $3.00. Spending increased year to year by about 3.6% . So even though gas prices were up from December of the previous year people were still spending money.

The Ripple Effect of $4.00 per Gallon Gas Is Uge and Everyone Should Be Really Pissed Because….

Let’s look at the impact: airlines are have to raise prices to cover fuel costs. Of course people have less money to spend on airline tickets because of what it costs to fill their gas tank. So fewer people fly, airlines cut flights and airlines cut jobs. Guess what …take the cruise industry - not as many people fly so they are not taking as many cruises and they are not scheduling time at resorts.

So you say you don’t care that much about the airlines and cruise ships and resorts. OK what about the price of lettuce. In a matter of one month at the place I shop the package of mixed greens I like increased by more than 15%. Why do you think you see an increase in food prices? What delivers food to the stores? Rights..trucks. What fuels trucks? Right gasoline and diesel fuel.

So now we have more people losing their jobs, prices increasing and an increase in the number of people blaming Saudi Arabia and the oil companies for the increases. Ladies and gentlemen our own federal government created this mess. Wait…we create our government. I don’t recommend looking to an outside source to blame. Look in the mirror first then move forward from there.

What is the solution? There doesn’t appear to be one action to restore the confidence in the US Dollar or is there? Could linking the value of the dollar to the price of gold be a solution? It seemed to work before. The weakness of the dollar is a big deal and it seems to be getting very little attention buy our current or pending leaders. They pay attention to what people want to hear and in this country people seem to be looking for increasingly larger government with more programs to “help” the citizenry. I don’t like it and suggest you examine your belief system on these points. I wonder what would happen if everyone who has a blog would start ranting about these issues? Do you think the leadership would pay attention? Of course they would. This all starts within.

Caution: Solutions From Snake Oil Salespeople:

What really takes off in an economic situation like we are dealing with is the classic image of the snake oil salesperson. But rather finding them on the back of a covered wagon, we find them in email messages, job boards, Craigs List, Facebook, MySpace , You Tube and an increasing volume of direct mail offers.

Get rich quick or get out of debt marketing capitalizes on people’s pain of losing jobs and the increasing number of people having difficulty keeping their homes. Objectivity in evaluating these offers can easily be lost and the valuable “rule of thumb…if it looks to good to be true, it probably is” fades into the background.

Now are there credible opportunities out there for making very good money? Absolutely but they involve you doing something to earn it. I recently been advertising for virtual assistants. I know there is very good income to be made with this work. I have this position posted in several prominent locations where I know there are qualified candidates. The response is very slim with one exception: I have a very interested company from an international country wanting to help me and I am seeing if that will work. Why is it that the aggressive labor pool seems to be available internationally but not in my own back yard? I have no idea.

There are jobs in the economy, there are credible business opportunities and if you have any questions about a business you are looking at or a business opportunity you are considering, just shoot me an email at StevePohlit@gmail.com and I will try to help you.

I instantly wanted to study the placement, the presentation and the copy. So the follow on question is did this presentation sell beds?

The company is not a client so there is no way for me to know for sure. My guess is that it is a very successful campaign even thought the copy is not very good and the graphics are just OK. So what makes me think the ad was very successful?

A two page foldout in a magazine published to appeal to wealthy people with the catch that $64,950 is for one bed is in itself intriguing. I am guessing those who have $100,000 in petty cash become very interested in this bed.

This article is not about a bed. The lesson is to appeal to your target audience. The company handcrafting this bed is not running the ad in ValPak. The placement is in a prestigious publication consistent with the quality and pricing of the product.

Valuable lesson. Pay close attention to ads and junk mail.

Sending all my readers the energy of vibrant health, happiness and prosperity.

It is unusual for me to watch TV. However for those of you that follow me on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace adn LinkedIn you know that I love the Stanley Cup Playoffs. While watching the most recent game I noticed an add during a commercial break that appeared to be an promotion for a home furnishings retailer. I quickly realized the promotion was for lead generation. This ad was designed specifically for viewers to request a resource on how to buy direct from over 700 manufacturers.

The promotion focused on the mark-up that retailers charge and asked “why should you pay their bills?” So this was clearly an emotionally engaging campaign. It was also targeted at anyone remodeling or building new. It also appealed to people intending on replacing home furnishings.

The focus of this ad was to motivate people to call or go to the web site to request their informational booklet. Clearly a squeeze page strategy using electronic media which in this case was TV. This was all very well done except showing home furnishing ads during a hockey game begs the question of whether this was the right program to be presenting the campaign.

While the ad was running I went over to my nearly always on computer and typed in their URL. Again - squeeze page only. The home page was there for one purpose which was to capture contact information. I was intrigued as to what they were really promoting. Is it a buying club with a monthly membership fee or something else?

I was very surprised to discover that I received a pass for an appointment to visit a physical place not more that one mile from my home and they were very specific as to the time. What is more interesting they now know my household (me) since their follow up survey wanted to confirm there was no problem having a baby sitter so I can could make the appointment. (The only baby sitter I need is for me.) They also know I am planning on at least some home furnishing replacements in the next 3-6 months. They asked and I told them.

I am likely to go to this appointment because I am very intrigued by what it is they want me to do. The location is not large enough for a showroom so my number one bet is that is is a buying club promotion. I will disclose the website with a follow up report in a few days.

In summary this is an excellent case study in lead generation. I certainly don’t know but it would not surprise me if Dan Kennedy was hired for this since he is one of the best marketers with TV media, copy and lead generation. Dan is the one who taught me how to pay attention to ads including infomercials. The effective ones on TV are effective sales letter in action. If you are interested in marketing you really should be getting Dan’s monthly newsletter. Click Here if you are interested.

This example is a great lesson in using multi-media for lead generation. TV, Phone, and the Internet are the primary tools being used and there is a mail in option presented but not emphasized. They did a good job and served as an example of why it is important to pay attention to well designed campaigns. And on that note I will ad there is no such thing as junk mail. Every piece is an opportunity to learn something even if it is what not to do.

Sending all my readers the energy of vibrant health, happiness and prosperity.

Jaime is a young lady from Toronto, Canada. She is the Next Internet Millionaire having earned that title after many long days and weeks of intense effort. She was judged by an elite crowd who have developed successful businesses using Internet marketing, direct marketing, publishing, informational products, videos, audio and more. These including Joel Comm, Rich Schefren, Mike Filsaime, Brad Fallon, Armand Morin to name a few. She is now a speaker having addressed a group of about 100 people at JV Alert in Orlando. This is a marvelous event by Ken McArthur which is where I met Jamie.

I have just listed a few highlights of what this lady has done. These are not who she it. Jaime is a person who speaks and lives from the heart. She started her presentation saying it was her first to any group and that shortly before being at the front of the room she threw up. She said she just wanted to get through it so she could sit down and enjoy the rest of her day. Folks that is as honest as you can get.

Even with that honest disclosure of how she felt, she spoke to us like we were sitting accross the table having a one on one over a cup of coffee. We learned about her deep heart felt motivation for competing at all in the Next Internet Millionaire Reality Show. Simply stated she was not living on purpose working in her 9-5 job. She even succeeded getting 100 or so Internet marketers and other business people to stand on their feet, clap and sing the Dolly Parton song 9 to 5. Two hours earlier she was throwing up and now she had the crowd singin and dancin. Can’t imagine what she gets us to do when she is confident speaker.

The real message story is about a young person knowing she is not happy with her 9-5 role but not knowing how to break out of that trap. Through a series of what seems like unlikely events that she acted on she is now an author, speaker and on her way to more success. She is well connected at an early stage in her career. She took the risks, she was scared and now in her words she is thankful and happy. Seems to me being grateful and happy is a very good place to be in life. Read her story - well worth the time and yes we can learn a lot from a young seemingly inexperienced person.

Are you a business owner, entrepreneur, direct marketer, internet marketer, network marketer or a person looking for the keys to success? If so this is must read information. Of course you don’t have to and you may not even “buy into” what I am presenting. I repeat: this is must read and must follow information.
——————————————————
Something has been missing. While I developed, implemented and proven the effectiveness of my 10 Minute MBA program, I knew that in a number of cases the success was not sustained. I rationalized this as a natural process of business owners slipping into to their previously established comfort zone.

In a way I used this seemingly natural regression as an opportunity to promote follow-on business consulting services. Now I understand that while ongoing services are valuable, the real reason for business performance to slip went deeper than the obvious failure to follow the established game plan that had been proven to work.

I also could see that in many instances that even when my Profit System was actively implemented and the business was hitting or even exceeding established milestones, something was missing.

When you are faced with a question where you don’t have the answer with confidence, what do you do? Well there is research of course and I did research this issue. Hundreds of hours of research. I also looked very carefully at those situations where people were hitting and exceeding the numbers consistently. I studied the contrasts.

I didn’t discover what I now feel is the answer until I examined my own experiences. I have been taught and influenced by my parents, my daughter, teachers, billionaires, priests, ministers, authors and very by all outward measures, successful internet and direct response marketers. There have been many other influencers but you get the idea. With all of this experience being taught and implementing a lot of what I was taught I found myself experiencing significant negative life situations. So I went to work to find out why. I went to work on myself.

This is not the forum for a description of the extent of that work. However, what I discovered literally transformed my life. This is an introductory article. I am suggesting you consider that if you are not on purpose there is no way for your business or you job to be satisfying - no way. Alternatively if you are on purpose and you use all the tools available to you, then not only will you be achieving your professional goals but more importantly you will be healthy, happy and at peace.

I suggest to you that being on purpose is more important than all the money you believe you want to make. Don’t misunderstand me. I want me and you to have all the abundance available for us while we are on this physical plane. I firmly believe there is unlimited abundance and I like that idea as much as anyone. At the same time, I remember the story about Andrew Carnegie in the book The Five Wishes. He was asked if his life was a success. He said he would give up all his money to have a truly happy marriage.

What is it that you wish for when asked if your life has been a success?

In this series of articles I will explore with you how personally being on purpose will make a dramatic difference in your life and your business. We will review a number of typical real life business examples and look at various outcomes as determined by the mindset of the person in the example. You will learn how to turn your business into a profitable cash producing machine.

Until the next time:

“If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.”

A company I work with is clearly on track to achieve a 20% increase in sales and profits. This business sells physical products on line - a traditional eCommerce business model. I noticed a slowdown in the rate of improvement in sales and profits earlier this year and a plan was developed to stabilize and then increase the rate of sales improvement.

A pay per click promotion was being used the three major engines. The campaigns needed a tune-up to improve return on investment and help improve the sales and profits trend line. Pay per click was the immediate focus since the projection was that it would have the fastest and most measurable influence on sales and profits in the near term.

Over the subsequent 3-4 months, a significant improvement in sales and conversion from pay per click advertising was recorded. The return on investment on net profits (revenue less cost of goods divided by pay per click costs) was very impressive for each primary keyword and ultimately for every secondary keyword. After about 4 months of working the campaigns, the performance, while very good, seemed to be nearly optimal and we went into maintenance mode. The improved ROI was not sufficient to ensure the Company’s sales targets for the year would be achieved. We implemented the next step of our marketing plan.

Marketing is about using appropriate channels for developing and maintaining customers. Direct mail and email are the “hands down” best ways in most instances to develop relationships with customers and targeted buyers. When done right, the business benefits tremendously because the customers know they are valuable. They respond by buying what you are offering. With a meaningful email database, marketing with email campaigns was viewed as the fastest way to further improve sales and profits.

Let me short cut the story to tell you that the email campaign is enormously successful. In total, the results exceeded projections. Here are the key points:

Every promotion needs to be evaluated on its own. We had pay per click campaigns and email marketing promotions fall flat. None of those were mistakes. The only mistake companies make is not marketing, not measuring what they market and not learning from campaigns that didn’t meet the mark.

In order to evaluate any marketing initiative, it must be set up so you can measure results. If this is the first time you are reading about testing, tracking and measuring ROI, congratulations. You now know the fundamentals of successful marketing. If you have read this before and are not implementing your marketing strategy using these principles then guess what - look in the mirror when you say your business is not performing or your marketing program is not delivering.

BONUS: I learned the value of having a technical person who understands the marketing objectives on the team. Setting up the tracking codes that allowed us to measure ROI for each keyword and email campaign was invaluable and work I prefer to have done by a person with those skills. In this case the company has qualified in-house resources. This is not always the case. If you are not confident you have or have access to the skill set required to set up the tracking codes then find those skills. There are independent consultants who have these skills at reasonable rates.

The Only Mistake In Marketing:

The only mistake in marketing is not setting up measurable campaigns. Dan Kennedy pounds on the importance of direct response marketing. Dan is absolutely right. John Reese is the master of testing. John is absolutely right. Learning from the masters is useless unless you act upon the lessons you learn.

In the fall of 2005 I received an invitation from Gary Halbert to a seminar in Orlando Florida titled “Root Canal”. He wrote many things in his invitation, but I will never forget the sentence where he said he was “the only instructor”.

At other seminars on copywriting and direct response marketing, Gary was always mentioned. Well, he was not just mentioned. There was usually a story to go with it. You either really liked this man or didn’t. Regardless, everyone respected his work.

I was one who liked the man and was fascinated by his marketing mind. Of course I raised my hand almost the instant I received the invitation and several months later I was off to Orlando for the Root Canal seminar.

There were about 60 of us in a small hotel conference room. Gary arrived early sat down and didn’t stop for three days. It was the most remarkable experience. A master just told us as much as he possibly could in three days about what he knew. True to form, he also would have had a large audience rolling out of their seats during a late night comedy hour and I do stress the late night part.

Brock Felt during his launch of Pipeline Profits tells of being called on by Gary for a hot seat and being told by Gary to sit down. I can tell you that is true since I was there. There were others with very recognizable names. I experienced the difference between someone successful and a master.

I know Gary’s influence is with us as long as we want it to be. I am sincerely grateful for having made the decision to attend Root Canal and to have met, talked and experienced his brilliance in person.

The loss of the human form is difficult for all of us. I pray his family. friends and admirers find peace in the letters, tapes and many memories he left all of us. Gary thank you for what you gave.

February 16, 2007, Orlando, Florida.

This week anyone at The Hotel Rosen in Orlando Florida is attending StomperNet or JV Alert. The real value with these conferences is that many of the best, brightest and most successful developers of businesses using the Internet are teaching and interacting with hundreds of smart, experienced and successful attendees.

Those transferring substantial votes of appreciation (money) have received far more in one day than what we gave. For me that happened in the first 2 hours.

A couple days ago I was talking with my former wife (we remain friends – which is how it should be) and I mentioned how a big part of the value I bring to my consulting clients is self-taught. She questioned me about that statement. We then discussed the significant role my work with learning from Internet marketers has played in helping others gain huge positive results for their business.

About 5 years ago I became a serious student of direct response marketing on line and off line and business development on line. In the past 12 hours I have had in-depth discussions with Brad Fallon on sourcing products in China, with Jason Potash regarding the use of article marketing for more traditional businesses and John Reese on website focus and strategy. In the past 12 hours I learned about important trends and new products emerging that can help all businesses.

As a member of StomperNet I will receive the DVD’s from this conference. However, watching DVD’s and being in the same room with all this energy focused on building profitable business is not the same. The best revenue building results achieved by my consulting clients have been by those who have implemented action steps based on what I have learned from conferences and training programs focused on building business. Those clients and companies I work with in the future will receive even more value as a result of my participation this weekend.

What is your business development strategy for this year and what are you doing to tap into the right resources for you to achieve that.

Wish you were here!!

May you and all permanently experience prosperous health, happiness and abundance

In this article I am going to give you a link that was sent to me as a funny video. You will soon understand why I am using this link in this message. This is a very important reminder that viral marketing can be very damaging or even destroy a business.

If you are new to the term, viral marketing, in a nutshell, is where one person tells or emails another about a website, story, video, movie, restaurant, product etc The message usually starts out with something like: hey____ you’ve gotta check this out.

Recently millions watched the Super Bowl. Whether you like his music or not Prince absolutely “wowed” most everyone. The papers gave him an outstanding rating. He performed flawlessly in pouring rain. Think about the impact on his record sales and his performance price tag. Guess what song was my most recent purchase from ITunes.

On the same show was the Snickers’ commercial along with a rather long list of other displays of marketing stupidity. But let’s examine the Snickers presentation. (If you don’t know what I am talking about - do a search on the Internet.) Was the intent to build brand awareness? Or was the intent to test direct response? Direct response may have been the ultimate goal since different endings that visitors to the web site could vote on were planned. I don’t know, but the real direct response was the outrage over the commercial and it being pulled two days after the Super Bowl.

My view is that it has nothing to do with motivating you want to buy a Snickers in fact it may have turned allot of buyers to alternative selections. It reminds me of some the outrageous subject lines used by Internet marketers. Sure I notice them. But they don’t make me want to read the message.

Moving on: What would you do to have the opportunity to showcase a new product introduction on Dave Letterman’s show? I’ll bet you would be prepared. You would make sure you looked the part and what you were showcasing worked right. Plus I’ll bet you would make sure there was at least a subtle reference to your web site or 800#. Even the newest people learning marketing would know to do this. Look at this clip - amazing. Click Here For Steamed
Can you imagine being a celebrity using your name with a new product introduction and having it turn out to be a major joke - on Letterman of all places. Come on.. you can’t tell me that even Richard Simmons doesn’t have common sense. If he doesn’t, he certainly has staff could to show him how to dress and act since he is associating his name with a product. I would really enjoy having the opportunity of watching this with Joel Bauer - Mr. Persuasion. I can only imagine Joel’s reaction.

The point is, you don’t have to be a master marketer to get it right. Just use common sense. I am not a marketing guru but just this year I finished helping two companies get on track for 2007 where their sales will increase 50% and profit growth will be higher than that. Of course it is not all marketing. But without an effective business development plan in place along with a management system in place that quickly confirms what is working and what is not so you can take appropriate action, you will not hit your target.

May you and all permanently experience prosperous health, happiness and abundance

Generally, I read every email, every blog post and every direct mail piece issued by a small select group of people. These are experts based on my own experience with their content. In most cases I have spent time with each of these people at conferences and seminars. They have earned tremendous credibility in the business community for their discipline.

I am alert to new ideas and results from others. However, with limited time, they do not receive nearly as much of my attention as the expert class. Dan Kennedy is in that class and this week he is on the phone revealing extraordinary successes achieved by ordinary people. Dan calls this group Renegade Millionaires. I have a lot of material on what the Renegades have achieved. An hour with Dan will be time well worth spent.

He is making the times very convenient and Dan usually does not record the calls so you can listen at other time. So take a look and jump in if you can. This is a complimentary call. Dan does not work for free but he will deliver allot of value in exchange for your time. So book at time and grab a couple of pens and a pad of paper and be ready for some great Dan Kennedy advise.

Situation Room:

Revenues nearly doubled in one year to more than $14 million. Profits hardly moved from the previous year which and those profits barely broke $0. When I reviewed this information with the founder of the business, he looked me directly and sternly in the eye and said “That’s Not Good!” We then went onto discuss the changes being implemented to posture the company for making money.

Today

Are those changes working? Too early to tell because I know from experience many companies never continue following what they are taught. They revert to the “way they have done business in the past.”

I am a business development consultant. I am not a permanent fixture in companies I help. I have a long list of companies that are successful. I have a shorter list of companies that are not. What is the difference?

Commitment!! If I show you “How To Increase Profits by 30% or More In 90 Days or Less” and that happens, you are happy. When I tell you what we just did must continue each day, week and month, you begin to think about what you have to do to make that happen and some people conclude they do not want to do that work. They would rather settle for mediocrity.

The Solution

It is harder to continue losing money than it is to make money. Think about it. When you are losing money, you not only have the work to do but you also have the draining worries associated with losing money. How do you think I know that? The solution is to make up your mind to be prosperous.

Now assuming you are losing money or not making the money you want, how do you change that? The companies I work with follow a proven program for success. How do I know? It has taken quite a bit of time and experience to identify the fundamentals of running a business that everyone can follow each day. Part of the experience was finding the people who run successful companies.

If you are using the Internet as part of your marketing strategy, who are you following. Right up front: don’t follow me except when it comes to blogs then read my Blogging for Profit Series - it will help you. So who should you follow? I pay attention to people who are obviously successful. When I met John Reese and had my picture taken with him outside his Lamborghini I knew he had achieved a measure of success and was delighted to have that opportunity of meeting him. He was gracious is very focused on sharing what works for him. John understands there are not limits to the amount of money in the world and if John Reese makes $20 or $200 or $2000 million, there are still millions and even more you can make. I highly recommend John’s material.

In 1990. I was in Aspen Colorado at a three day summit for people running companies owned by an investment firm. The hosts of that meeting were two brothers whose net worth was at least multiple billions of dollars (yes that is a B). The learning curve for me at that time was fast and furious. I learned very successful people have a very clear definition of their business, the direction of their business and profit goals are clearly defined and the support structure necessary to achieve their business goals is soundly in place.

To The Point

Today at the start of every consulting project I reach agreement with the owners and management team on the definition of their business and the near term revenue and profit goals. We then move onto growth rates and setting the procedures and processes in place for achieving those goals.

This process is provided to everyone interested in the complimentary mini-course How To Increase Profits by 30% or More In 90 Days or Less (Register Here). This course is as relevant for internet marketers as it is for billion dollar companies.

It all starts with a clear definition of what you want and what you are prepared to do. Once you decide, follow a proven roadmap. Do you think it is coincidence this blog is named “Roadmap To Extraordinary Profits”? By the way, over time certain of the tools and techniques used in achieving extraordinary profits are refined. Like you I pay close attention to the tools and techniques developed by experts to help your business. I frequently mention the people who continue to help me with their training. The experts on my list are there because they help me based on my interests and my intent on using what I learn for myself and clients.

For those who say their business is Internet marketing I say your business has to be more clearly defined. Ed Dale is applying “the buy em and flip em model” for web sites and has evolved from a number of business models. I think Ed has a clear definition of his business but I can’t define it. Brad Fallon has a very traditional business model with search engine optimization as the engine. Frank Kern who may be an idiot savant, has a clear business model of monetizing small niche markets. Dan Kennedy is a copywriter and direct response marketing guru. Bill Glazer is an information marketer. Dan and Bill also run the college of direct response marketing through their newsletters, seminars and information products. Ken McCarthy is an educator. His System Seminar teaches people. Ken spends some of his time and resources on non-direct teaching but he loves to teach and does a great job doing so. I could go on but you get the point. Look at any person that you view as success and generally what business they are in is clear. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Have a clear definition of your business and a clear measurable goal for your business. Then measure the progress frequently.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of measuring progress frequently . I develop a key factors report for every company I work with that tracks progress. For example in a retail business we track sales and gross margin trends. In the contracting industry we track flow of requests to bid and make sure bids submitted and ultimately the work completed tracks with the gross margin goals. In those industries and all others where I do work we always have an annual plan of revenue, margin and profit. Again this is detailed in the currently free course How To Increase Profits by 30% or More in 90 Days or Less

Avoid thinking tools are your business. The Internet, SEO, direct response marketing, copywriting, niche marketing, video, podcasts, autoresponders co-registration, infomercials, and more are tools. Recognize these are tools and continually ask yourself what are the tools that will really help your business the most. Then as others point out so well, what are the activities that need your skills and which ones should be outsourced.

Allot of times I write for my own benefit meaning it crystallizes my own thinking and in order to write about a topic you need to have a level of experience with the subject matter. This article for example originated because I have not personally focused on a clear definition of my own business and I have not completed a clear financial plan with action steps for myself. I am now doing this and I am optimistic this will be my best year ever (and I have had some really good years.)

I wish you prosperous health, happiness and abundance

I purchased the Thanksgiving local newspaper for $.35 for the ads. There is wisdom in those ads that is worth tons of money.

Did you know Target has one of the hottest niche products featured on its key pages promoting Friday and Saturday specials? Do you know what that product is or even how I know it is that hot? Do you wonder why the other retailers missed it? I don’t wonder I know precisely why. Do you want to know what that product is? Look up my email contact information at www.stevepohlit.com and drop me a line.

Do you know that Best Buy has black Friday specials that are so hot they are giving tickets out starting at 4AM for people who want in at 5AM? Are any other retaileres doing this? None that I found. Do you think someone will start Black Friday at 12:01 AM sometime soon? I’ll bet on it. Do I agree with any of that? Doesn’t matter. The only thing that counts if you are retailer is the gross margin in the cash register. There will be some winners? Want to know who they are? I will tell you who will be the big winners this selling season in one week. Subscribe to Steve Reports and don’t miss it.

Did you notice the extensive joint ventures done by Circuit City, Best Buy, and other major chains? Did you know that these deals started nearly a year ago? Do you think you can learn a few things from what is working and what is not working this season and apply them to your business?

Do you know that most small businesses and entrepreneurs will ignore the reasons for others succeeding that are right in front of them? Now you know that some of these lessons can be found by spending 35 cents on Thanksgiving.

Do you think there is insight on what item are hot in the 6AM - 11AM specials offered on Black Friday? (Excluding Best Buy and several others who are now stating at 5 AM)

Do you want to be a store manager of a store opening at 5 AM on the day after Thanksgiving? Can you imagine what you are thinking about all day Thanksgiving? Do you know how companies are able to find and motivate people to do this the day after Thanksgiving?

The above is just a short list of what came to mind as I studied the Black Friday ads. Some would say I was working. I happened to see Warren Buffet being interviewed recently and he was laughing talking about loving what he does. His quote was along the lines of ” I tap dance to work every day. I have more money than nearly everyone else and it doen’t matter, I just love what I do”

I love what I do and you will see more evidence of how I am helping others gain tremedous value in their business by paying attention to what works.

Now if you used the Thanksgiving ads to wrap the scraps from dinner, you will want to find the copies not sold in the morning at your local convenience store waiting to be picked up and grab yourself another copy.

The following article by my friend Allyn Cutts offers excellent advise and is a courtesy of Steve Pohlit, Business Development Consultant who helps companies develop and implement business building marketing programs and organizational processes to optimize profit growth.

Are You Top Of Consciousness

How many great ideas have you had that fizzled and evaporated into thin air? Heck, they were darned good ideas too! The problem wasn’t the ideas, it was implementing them… making them work.

We’ve been talking about Top of Consciousness Marketing, one of the greatest marketing tools I’ve come across. Now it’s time to do a little strategizing about ways to make it work for you. There’s no sense in letting another brilliant idea vanish!

How often and how many ways could you contact a potential customer outside of normal visits to you place of business? Quick! Make a list…

Here are a few to get you going:

* Seasonal greetings
* Post cards
* Birthday cards
* Newsletters
* Catalogs
* Flyers
* Special sale notices
* Telephones calls
* Emails
* Thank you’s

Listen up, here’s the secret to effectively obtaining Top of Conscious positioning in the mind of your customers… finding 10 to twelve ways to contact them every year.

Newsletters are probably one of the easiest ways to implement a regular contact system with your customers and potential customers. A monthly newsletter written in an informative and entertaining style is something your customers and potential customers will look forward to. It’ll also go a long way in establishing your credibility as an expert in your field of business.

Who doesn’t appreciate a personalized “Thank You?” It doesn’t really matter if it’s a phone call, and email, a card or a bouquet. It’s the thought that counts.

Remember the pleasant surprise of an unexpected birthday card? Hey, it always feels good to have someone remember your special day.

The key to staying on at the top of peoples minds is simply getting their attention on a regular basis. Pick one or 10 of these methods and start using them to get the attention of your potential customers and to keep loyal customers feeling appreciated.

Stick around for some more great ideas on implementing Top of Consciousness strategies.

Dedicated To Your Further Success.

All the best,

Allyn Cutts

The number of companies using classic lead generation and direct response marketing is very small, the opportunity for marketers to help others is huge. You don’t have to be one of the gure’s to make a difference. Here are some examples of what is working:

McDonalds

McDonalds promotes a $1.00 menu in many markets. Do they lose money on this promotion? For just the $1.00 menu, McDonalds probably covers all of their food costs. In the accounting world after considering other direct costs, McDonalds is probably not making any money on the dollar meal promotion. So why do they do it?

First the dollar promotion is very popular with students and even that group generally spend more than a dollar adding on additional items to their order. Students who like the deal, bring their friends and the average ticket often exceeds $3.00. In the fast food industry McDonalds is doing quite well.

The $1.00 meal is classic lead generation. Is it perfect direct response marketing? Hardly, since McDonalds still does not do much to build their data base of customers and use it for a direct to customer communication strategy.

Here are a couple of other examples:

Men’s Warehouse

They offer the “Perfect Fit Program”. This is classic direct response marketing. On line or in the store there are attractive offers to become part of this program. Members receive attractive offers by email on special buys and sales. Based on my experience with this retailer, they execute their lead generation and communication strategy very well.

Blue Hippo

Have you ever seen these brief informercials on TV? Blue Hippo wants you to send you a computer. They target people with limited resources by offering them a weekly payment plan. It appears they will send a computer to just about anyone. Their promotion is also classic direct response. The ad runs and viewers are asked to call an 800 number. Very easy to calculate return on investment. Run the ad, measure the calls received and measure the conversion of calls received to shipments booked. I have no idea of the economics of their business, but if it is like other pay by the week businesses the profit margins are huge.

The Number of Good Examples of Direct Response Marketing Are Increasing. Companies are beginning to wake up to the importance of measuring return on investment from marketing dollars. However, for every business having a marketing program that is structured to track return on investment, there are thousands that do not.

Even the companies that have in-house marketing experts often do not really know how to maximize the return on investment from their marketing dollars. Just this week I met with the CEO and marketing expert of a medium sized company that I am helping with a business plan and projections in connection with their interest in securing additional funding for an accelerated growth program. In examining what they have done in the past, I learned they purchased a targeted list of 5,000 leads. A mailing campaign with postcards was designed and implemented.

Sounds good so far. Upon closer examination, no testing was done on the marketing message. They could have used Google Adwords to test response rates and conversion of versions of their message. Even if they didn’t want to do that, they should have tested a sample of the 5,000 before have the postcard printed for a three step sequential mailing. The point is they are doing something, they are trying but they missed several key points that would have increased their return on investment.

Being on the list of most of the well known direct response marketers, it seems natural to identify gaps in my marketing expertise. Then I simply start paying closer attention to the marketplace and find huge opportunities for improvement. With every one of my consulting clients I work through with them enhanced processes and procedures to grow revenue and maximize gross margin and net profit. This approach is detailed in the free course “How To Increase Profits by 30% or More in 90 Days or Less” which can be found at www.stevepohlit.com and “Blogging for Profits” which is another free series that can be found here at www.stevereports.com

Zale Corp. vs. Signet: One Tested…The Other Didn’t…Look At The Dramatically Different Results

Ann Zimmerman and Kris Hudson reported a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal that describes the dramatically different results of two very large mass market jewelers - Zale Corp. and Signet. Zale’s jewelry division is headquartered in Texas. Signet which owns Kay’s Jewelers and Jarid is based in the UK. Both companies target market share in the huge U.S. market.

If you are in business, you must read the papers and magazines that deliver lessons and ideas that will help you. A quick review of the articles I publish reveals many examples taken from publications that are used as valuable lessons. Today’s article is no different.

In direct response marketing circles there has always been a lot of attention to the importance of testing. That industry uses what is called the “control”. This is the direct mail piece that has a predictable rate of response when mailed. Once established, writers are challenged to beat the control. The best copywriters, the ones with long running controls, make a ton of money because they deliver the goods.

I was trained in retail by some of the best in the industry in the 80’s. Then I worked with fashion retail, mass merchandisers and specialty stores. The divisions of The Limited were particularly skilled at identifying fashion trends that were popular in foreign markets, replicating enough of an item for a market test and then if the tests met their expectations, they would quickly mass produce the item and fly finished production to their US distribution center where the garment would be in the stores in a matter of weeks.

Every successful retailer is constantly testing market response. Every successful internet marketer is constantly testing market response. Market testing is critical for maximizing profits at companies. So what was Zale Corp. thinking when they implemented a complete change in jewelry merchandising strategy following a lackluster Christmas selling season in 2005? I don’t know and if it has worked the story might be different. But moving from a mass market strategy to an upscale market strategy in a matter of months chain wide end in a financial disaster for Zale and possibly the end of the careers for a number of people at the company including the CEO. Signet on the other hand is following a strategy of consistently testing and modifying its product offer based on the results of the testing. They base their merchandise strategy on listening to what the consumer wants as evidenced by how they spend their money.

I have been in business long enough to know that the former CEO of Zale Corp. probably has his side of the story and it is different from the message published in the WSJ. However, the financial results of the two companies speak for themselves and reinforce the importance of testing.

The roadmap to success in business is relatively easy to follow. Every day I am working with companies who realize hire me because they know they can be doing better and need a refresher on the fundamentals of doing business. Testing is one of the fundamentals for most businesses. If you are not doing it, or if you do not have a formalized testing process in place with the details of the tests being run presented at management meetings, start now.

It is amazing to me that so many companies missed a great opportunity to attract loyal customers by using proven marketing techniques targeted to their customers and prospective customer in the group of more than 43 million people watching the American Idol finals. Nearly every company paying all or a portion of the $739,000 per 30 second spot missed the mark. Several were ridiculous in their presentation and message.

Two of the foundation marketing  principles that I use to help companies drive high profitable sales growth are:

First: The message should be developed to appeal to your target audience.

Second: The effectiveness of the promotion must be measurable so you can calculate return on investment. This means you need to be able to track the response to the marketing promotion. This is the foundation of direct response marketing.

As to direct response marketing. Many in the advertising agency business argue for building brand awareness. That is a legitimate and worthwhile goal. Cingular is a cell phone brand. They ran a promotion for a hot monthly subscription price and an even hotter free phone if you called a special 800 number. It seems to me that they had a plan to build brand awareness and track response to the promotion. It also looked to me like they may have been doing some split testing since other ads run during the American Idol finals did not have the same direct response features. If in fact that was a planned split test campaign, I am not sure how they were measuring the effectiveness of the non-direct response advertisements.

Coke Cola, a traditional institutional brand advertising company at least on television, moved to testing direct response by encouraging viewers to go to a specific web site for a promotion. It moved pretty fast so I didn’t get the website address or even remember the special offer. I imagine a lot of other people didn’t either. But they are moving in the right direction by linking a promotion to a measurable call to action.

I am not in the target age group for Ford’s "bold moves" campaign but I wonder
how showing a woman cutting her hair off and a man competing with one leg makes you want to buy a car. If it does, how would they know?

43 million people watching the finals and Wendy’s promotes a big frosty. With the awareness of high calorie, fat building foods going through the charts, I wonder how many people were motivated to go to a Wendy’s after that commercial. Now I could be very wrong here so if Wendy’s really wanted to know the effectiveness of that ad, why not "GIVE AWAY A FROSTY TO ANYONE GOING TO A SPECIAL SITE SET UP TO CAPTURE NAME, ADDRESS AND EMAIL. IN EXCHANGE THEY CAN PRINT OUT IMMEDIATELY A COUPON FOR A FREE FROSTY." Now there is a test with multiple benefits.

If someone can explain to me the point of a bunch of people running around in madras shorts and tops, pleaseemail me. I just could not see how that ad would make anyone want to jump in their car and get over to Old Navy. No wonder same store sales for The Gap are tanking.

A couple other ads fell into the Old Navy category. One was Fantastic Sams.  It didn’t well - it just didn’t. One of Sony’s ads went so fast that I couldn’t tell what it was they were offering and I was paying close attention to the advertising. Most people watching American Idol most likely did not watc
